There’s a new bikini phenomena in Snohomish County’s coffee country.

Bikini-clad baristas are serving customers espresso via drive through coffee stands.

Mix a half of a cup of Starbucks with a quarter cup of Hooters and you’ll have the newest form of service work for young women: Selling sexpresso.

There’s gold in those sexy cups… I mean coffee cups, that is.

According to a recent article on Heraldnet.com entitled Sexy espresso’ stands leave competitors steaming, “Some competing businesses say “sexpresso” stands are changing the marketplace.” With more than 150 businesses with espresso in their name, sexy coffee-serving imitators are now flourishing in the county.

We’ve seen the boobs and the bikinis, but where’s the beefcake?

No signs of men serving hot mocha in their skivvies or tighty–whities, yet.  But if there are any feminists in Washington state, there will be plenty of protests. Why not? Women deserve some sexy coffee in the morning, too.

The real question is: Are young women being exploited?

Think women who use their sexuality to sell a product merely pawns in the male chauvinists’ chess game? Well it depends on the woman and her views of sexuality, indecency and exploitation.

I presume that some of these teenage beauties view selling coffee in their bikinis, are a little less Girls Gone Wild…and a lot more like selling wings for tips to drooling male patrons in orange hot pants.

Not in front of my kids you don’t.

In Bonney Lake, Washington a mother staged a 2008 Memorial Day sexpresso protest of the sexpresso coffee servers. She was outraged when two pastie-covered boobs in a bikini greeted her children at a Hot Chick-a-Latte drive through.

Despite the protests of the well-intentioned mother, as long as a woman looks great in a bikini and is brave enough to sell a little lingerie with a latte, sales of sexpresso will undoubtedly soar.

With names like Hot Chick-a-Latte, Mocha Boat and Cowgirls Espresso, I can’t knock the creativity of the Washington coffee kiosk owners, even if the innovation is ripped from the Hooters playbook. Maybe the experience of sipping cappuccino in European-style coffee shops a la Starbucks, is wearing thin with consumers.

With gas prices soaring and inexpensive entertainment options dwindling, maybe a few Washington state coffee lovers crave some Las Vegas stripper action mixed in with their morning cup of joe.
