Best Bathing Suits for Different Body Types

When its time to take a dip in the pool or visit the beach, covering your body with a muumuu is fashionable; but this large swath of fabric is not a swimsuit alternative.

If you dread buying a swimsuit, finding the best bathing suit for your body type is not that difficult, if you follow a few fashion rules. By identifying your body type and using a few expert shopping tips, you can purchase a suitable swimsuit that hugs your frame and hides your flaws.

Bottom-Heavy

If you want to cover wide hips or a large bottom, choose an A-line skirted swimsuit. In fact, this “body skimming silhouette hides lumps and bumps without looking frumpy,” suggests the editors at Good Housekeeping. To bring the eye upward, wear a bold color like red, purple or yellow at the bustline, and a dark color at the bottom of the suit. Avoid shiny fabrics or too small bottoms that cut into your flesh and create bulges.

Full Bust

A woman with an ample bosom should look for bathing suits that support a full bust with an underwire or full cups. If you like extra detailing on your swimsuit, such as embellishment, draping or shirring, wear these details on the bottom of your swimwear to draw the eye downward. To minimize a full bust wear bathing suits with a high Lycra content, that feature dark colors on the top and lighter colors below.

Boyish Figures or Small Busts

For women with boyish or athletic figures, the desire to add curves to a thin or muscular body type is your first priority. To boost a boyish figure, wear bathing suits that feature big prints. “A large print breaks up a straight silhouette and create curves,” recommends the fashion experts at Marie Claire. If you have a small bust choose a bra-styled tops with underwire. Bikini tops with ruffles and embellishment give the illusion of a larger bust.

Curvy Figures , Flabby Tummy or Short Waists

To conceal a flabby tummy or flatter a curvy body, use V-neck or halter-style swimsuits to elongate the body and showcase your shape. If you are short-waisted, a tankini (that features a high-waisted bottom and a tank top) will elongate your torso and highlight your curves. Accentuate a curvy frame with belts, wrapped styles and diagonal patterns that feature the waist. Both curvy figures–and women looking to conceal a larger stomach–should choose swimwear with a high Lycra content and color blocking along the sides of the garment.
